Manehattan Blues by The-Wizard-of-Art Manehattan Blues by The-Wizard-of-Art
A commission for :icontheshadowscale:

So, you know how I said the last commission was challenging? Take that and crank it up to eleven, and you've got this piece right here. Still, it was a lot of fun, and certainly a diversion from my usual repertoire. If I keep this up I just might learn how to paint.

Watercolor on 9x12 140 lb. Strathmore watercolor paper. Finished:5/25/16

The best thing you can do when it comes to backgrounds is to not treat them as separate from your subject. Rather, design your subject and background to interact with and compliment each other.

HOLY CRIKES! This would be a marvel purely digital, but that you did it traditional...! Wow. I adore the cloudy sky and the watery shine of light on the streets. Great job! :)

Oh, that is just beautiful! The reflections on the post-rain city streets are very well done! The addition of Coco Pommel is a nice touch, as well as the advertisement that calls back to 'Green Isn't Your Color.'

Thanks! As soon as I saw the word "Manehattan" in the commission I knew I'd have to throw Coco Pommel in somewhere, and "Green Isn't Your Color" is still one of my favorite episodes. :D

The angle of this piece is amazing. You captured the idea of the large, imposing buildings amazingly. I love the lighting too, cities lighting up the night can look so cool, particularly big cities. Great job bringing this big city to life, that is, everything as well as the actions of all the characters.

I now have even more appreciation for your work. I tried watercolors. . . I failed big time. Although, the fact that I didn't have the proper paper added to it, but I'll definitely be needing more practice.
This piece is absolutely beautiful. The level of detail is insane for traditional art, and the fact that it's realistic make it even better.
Did you use all watercolor? (Mainly I'm wondering for the highlights and reflections on the street)
^-^

I think one of my first tries at watercolor was a hobbit back in 2007. I painted it on some sort of printer paper which wrinkled up horribly, and the picture itself was absolute rubbish. Once I got some watercolor paper and learned how to tape it down, and started thinning the paint with water my results were at least a little less horrifying. ;p
Most of the highlights were masked off with masking fluid, but when I was nearly finished with painting I noticed the figures in the background blended in too much. I used white ink with a brush to add more highlights and make them stand out.

It's always interesting to hear beginning stories of other artists. Lol, I can learn from that. Sounds like some of my problems atm. I guess I can go steal/borrow some watercolor paper from my bro (same source as my paint. He doesn't even use the stuff anyway. It was for a class.)
Does the masking fluid leave any discoloration on the paper? I know it doesn't affect canvas, but it tore up the (non-watercolor) paper I tested it on.

Masking fluid can leave a yellowish stain if left on for more than a few weeks, so don't be too slow about it. Also, masking fluid tends to royally ruin your brushes, so you'll want an applicator of some sort. I've heard that blending tortillons work well for fine lines. As for the fluid tearing the paper, I'll refer you to one of my favorite artists. gold-seven.deviantart.com/art/…

It they do, then Photo Finish has to give Fluttershy her share of the royalties and image use.

That would explain why FS doesn't seem to need a job.
